Electrical Goods Policy

3 Pillars Dunstable aims to provide electrical goods safely and responsibly to people in need.

We do not test, repair, modify or refurbish electrical goods. For this reason, we will normally only accept and provide new, unused and unopened electrical items.

Accepting Electrical Goods

Electrical goods may be accepted only where they are:

• New, unused and in their original packaging

• From a known or reputable source

• Complete with appropriate instructions, leads and plugs where applicable

• In visibly good condition, with no damage to packaging, cables, plugs or casings

• Not subject to a product safety recall

Volunteers must not accept electrical goods which appear damaged, incomplete, altered or unsafe.

Used Electrical Goods

We do not normally accept or distribute used electrical goods.

Used goods may only be considered where the Trustees have agreed a written arrangement with a competent external organisation to test or refurbish them before they are supplied.

Safety Checks

Before an electrical item is passed on, the responsible volunteer should check that:

• The packaging is intact

• The item appears suitable for its intended use

• The plug, cable and casing show no signs of damage

• Instructions are available where needed

• The item has not been recalled or subject to a safety alert

Any item which raises a safety concern must not be supplied.

Items We Will Not Accept

We will not accept or distribute:

• Damaged electrical goods

• Items with exposed wires, damaged plugs or damaged cables

• Modified or repaired items where the work cannot be verified

• Goods subject to a safety recall

• Used electrical goods, unless they have been approved and processed through an agreed external testing or refurbishment arrangement

Records and Responsibility

Where practical, a record should be kept of significant electrical items received and supplied, including the item description, source and date provided.

Volunteers must report any concern about an electrical item to the Service Lead immediately. The item must be removed from circulation until a decision has been made.

Review

This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if our activities, legal requirements or safety arrangements change.
